PiYo: Align - The Fundamentals Review

Hello everyone!

Last week, I mentioned how I would try PiYo out, and review each video as I do them.

Here's the first video!

It's called Align: The Fundamentals and basically what it is is an instructional video.  It's 40 minutes of Chalene demonstrating the poses and you do them along with her and the other three people in the video (each demonstrating beginner/modified, intermediate, and advanced)

I agree with all of these statements except the last one, the "strengthening flow that will have your blood pumping".   Maybe it does for some people, but to me there was a lot of stopping, a lot of talking, and I didn't totally feel that I got a "workout".

If you are experienced in yoga,  you will not need this, mostly you learn the different warrior poses, up/down dog, half moon, triangle, and a few moves like the PiYo flip.

I do recommend at least giving this a watch, but I do not agree with them using it as the first real workout.    I also do not recommend it as a replacement or an "easy" day.

Next review will be Define: Lower Body.

I hope everyone had a good week, see you next time with my next review!

Power 90 Day 3

Hello!

Ok, so I got the hang of how Power 90 works now, and the first two days I sorta just went with it to see what it would feel like.

Day 3, another strength day, hurt. It hurt a lot.   This time I did something different.  Instead of trying to do as many as I could trying to keep up with the people in the video (not completing all 15 reps of most of the exercises), I did what I used to do with Metamorphosis- watch, pause, do, repeat.  It took a little longer than the 30 or so minutes but the end result is I was able to get the most out of it

Speaking of muscle soreness and cramping, if you didn't already know, drinking coconut water is a great way to help alleviate some of the pain.   The reason is because coconut water has a lot of potassium in it (more than a banana) and it is very hydrating.  While at Costco today, I was browsing the aisles (I haven't been there in a while) and to my delight and surprise, they now carry 12 packs of Vita Coco plain coconut water.  Pricing depends on your local Costco but by me it was a little over $15 for a pack of 12 and I ended up buying 2 cases.

Today is Christmas Eve, some of you may already be celebrating early, or depending on where you are, it might be Christmas now.  Hannukah is also in progress, so I will close this post by wishing all of you (wether you celebrate or not) a happy, healthy holiday season.

Taking a break from TAM for now... but hear me out!

Hello everyone~

Yes, the title is true. I am putting TAM on the backburner now after careful thought. (I have also posted thoughts of holding off on it before)

I am not saying that TAM doesn't work. It does. It's just not working FAST enough for what I need it to do.  I want to lose the initial 80-90 pounds relatively fast and when I am lighter, THEN go back to TAM to refine the work I have done on my body. If my starting weight was around 160-170 pounds then it would be fine.

I am doing Beachbody's Power 90 program right now, and MAY go on to P90X to lose more (I am too out of shape to do P90X at the moment). It all depends on the kind of results I get with Power 90.

Yes, these programs require a lot of weight training and stuff, but bulking up right now is not really on my list of problems. My main goal right now is just to burn off a good portion of the fat I have.  Worry about bulking/toning up/refining my shape later.

But that's not to say that TAM will totally be out. I still want to do the cardio portion for a few reasons.

1. The Power 90 workouts are not very long. Especially the strength training days. I want to add some extra cardio if possible. Nothing wrong with doing cardio every day, now is there?

2. I want to be able to have learned all of the dance cardio (or most of them) by the time I am back to doing TAM.   Meta and Boot Camp cardio is boring and by then I want to be able to dance around.  The choreographed stuff is not just more mentally challenging but physically as well.

I do not doubt that TAM will make you lose weight. I just want the initial flab off faster even if it means doing "traditional" exercise.

Have a great day and I will post my first workout day shortly.

New plan- short version!

Hello everyone!

I have come up with a system to get myself in fighting shape for Tracy.  I really am starting to think that it's not QUITE what I need to lose this massive amount of weight I'm carrying.   I am breaking this down into 2 phases.

Phase 1:
Weight watchers
Walking/Jogging
Chalean Extreme

Why Chalean Extreme?  Yes, I am afraid of bulky muscles. However at this point, building more muscle will help get the majority of my excess fat off so that I can do TAM more effectively.

Phase 2: Metamorphosis by Tracy, continuity, etc. to burn off lard and slim down any bulky muscles I may have built with Chalene. When I am lighter I will be able to do the workout a lot better, and not be too heavy for dance cardio.

I plan on getting back to TAM when I hit around 200 pounds. Chalean Extreme is a 90 day program also.

I am really excited to be starting this. I will take new before pics (I do look different, at least I think so) and measurements.

Starting this on Monday, have a great weekend!

Metamorphosis Day 1

Hello everyone!

I decided to switch from boot camp to metamorphosis, and I began on June 13 (yesterday).  I also took my starting stats.  I ate all manner of foulness (junk food) over the weekend and it made me wake up and realize weight loss is REALLY about 80-90% diet.

Starting weight: 279.4 lb
Bust: 49 inches
Waist: 46 inches
Hips: 53 inches
Arms: L- 17 R- 16
Thighs: L- 30.5 R 31.5

Today I did all of my Muscular Structure work, 20 reps a leg and it KILLED me. As in body-felt-like-rubber killed. But it's not the horrible debilitating "I hurt myself!" pain. I did the DC for 30 minutes, step touching and really using my arms. I know my level (which is VERY IMPORTANT to avoid injury! Don't be a hero!!!) and I do work out hard enough to get tomato red and sweaty. If you can jump around easily (because you are far fitter than I) then go for it. :)

Diet was day 1 of the Nutrient Boost week. This means that every day this week consists of eating:

Kale juice
Carrot Parsnip Puree
Sweet Potato Corn Pudding (Yum!)
Tomato Gazpacho (tastes much better with roasted tomatoes)
Tofu protein soup (or chicken)
Blueberry applesauce
Chocolate chestnut pudding.

Next week I get to eat solids again, but I am actually loving one part of the puree parts- I only had to cook ONCE. Now I have all the food I need for the week, no pots and pans, and it's just there when I need it.

In the end, day 1 done! 89 to go!

Exercise ruts and some ways to bust out!

Hi guys!

Many of you may know me from the Tracy Anderson Method group on facebook where I post fairly often.

One of my recent posts was about my exercise and diet rut that I seem to be stuck in.

As you can see I used to be very actively doing exercise and somewhat dieting.  This lasted about a month or so and then I got sick, and I took off from exercising.  This turned into over a month now of excuses and laziness.  I just haven't felt like exercising or eating well really.

Giving it some thought, I thought of some reasons for my lack of motivation.

1. Lately my sleep schedule has been really off kilter.  When I was into the exercising, I woke up at a reasonable time and went to bed around midnight. Now its more like sleep at 4 am, sleep all morning until the afternoon, feel like crap for the rest of the day, repeat.   Today I woke up at 7:30 am, and have been forcing myself to be awake for the rest of the day in an attempt to get this back on track.

2. I have been feeling really stiff, bloated, and like I've aged 60 years.  Also my lady friend is all off kilter too. Both I believe are attributed to my first thing.

3. Stress I don't think is too much of a factor, at least in the mental kind of way, but I guess the lack of sleep could be physically stressing.

So the bottom line- GET  MY ASS TO BED!!!!  Haha. All kidding aside, I got a lot of helpful advice and support from my friends in the TA group.  This advice really goes for any kind of exercise rut, not just TA.

- Choose a day to work out and just do it- with the mentality that next time will be easier.
- Start small- build up the amount and intensity gradually until you are back in your old swing of things.
- If the reason for your rut is plain old boredom, switch up your exercise.
- (A funny one) Get naked and do yoga in front of the mirror- ew! Hahaha!
- Keep yourself accountable to someone- be it online or one of your friends. Preferably someone with similar fitness goals/type of exercise that you are doing.
- (For those who are doing TA like I am) Try her boot camp book that just came out.

Speaking of book, that is the number one thing I want for Christmas this year, even if it's ALL I get.

Today I am going to take a walk outside and stretch. I feel too stiff and weird to do TA today, especially in my hips. Ouch!  I think I will hit the Tracy Wagon full force by  Monday, taking today - Sunday to stretch myself out and re-calibrate my sleep.

How do you guys get out of YOUR ruts?

The new Day 2- 10/12/10

Hey everyone!

Today was a half good, half bad day.

Bad news first- I overate a teeny bit on my diet.  My friend and I went to 7-11 and decided to try some new treats.  And, I snacked a lot during the day. Then again that time of the month is very very near so I am not going to beat myself up.

The breakdown-

Breakfast-

Oatmeal- 2 points

Snacks-

Lemonhead candy- 2 points
A lot of rice cakes- 5 points
Deli salami (I was really craving this today and I ate a lot of it... ) 7 points
Lunch-

1/2 of a ramen bowl- 4 points
3 ounces of roast beef- 5 points

Dinner (or "Dinner")

2 corn dogs- 16 points
1 pizza roll- 7 points
1 can of regular coke- 3 points

Total points today... 49, 16 over my 33 limit.

However, all is not lost.

Weight watchers allows an extra 35 points during the week for slipups, or to save for eating out.  But before I took off points for that....

We have what they call Activity points- extra points earned from, you guessed it, activity.

My activities for today-

Cleaning my apartment- -1 point
Tracy Anderson Beginning Dance Cardio- -6 points

Points are calculated based on your weight, intensity, and how long you did it.   Also as a rule, only eat 4 points worth of these activity points max, then deduct the rest from your weekly points.

So the end result: 33 daily, 4 activity (eaten), and 12 weekly points gone.  On a side note, weekly points are purely optional, as are activity points. The extra 4 points you can eat are if you WANT to have a treat.  However,  you should always eat all of your daily points.  (I hope this makes somewhat of sense...)

On the subject of exercise:

I accomplished doing BDC through the warmup and combos 1-3. I do take breaks between songs but then I go back at it.  And yes, I do tire now and then, especially during the up tempo-with music parts, in which case I do sidesteps and grapevines back and forth to the music engaging my arms until I am ready to get back into the actual routine.  I would have done combo 4 but it's late, and I don't want to pester the neighbors.  I do feel it in my lungs still, for sure!  No Perfect Design today, but tomorrow morning/afternoon I aim to do PD1 first, then get through at LEAST combos 1-2 of BDC.

Day 35- 9/5/10

Hello again!

This has been 5 weeks into it, although week 5 wasn't stellar at ALL.  However, there's always next week to do better!

I did get the opportunity to see an excerpt of Tracy Anderson's new book (Comes out this month actually~), and all I have to say is DO WANT!
The link to the excerpt is here:

I have discovered that my hormones are my main weakness. I do however give myself credit for not going crazy with the eating every day this past week, as I normally would. I have a terrible feeling doing PD1 after all this slacking is going to hurt. In a good way.

Next week will be better- We have a holiday in the US, I have the day off tomorrow from class but NOT from Tracy Anderson. :)

Have a great week, and see you tomorrow as usual!

Day 10- 8/11/10

Hello~

Feeling tons better today! Woke up early, did some housework, and got my workouts in.  Didn't eat much either.  Medicine I am on decreases my appetite and today was pretty hot out, that has a similar effect on me at times.

Breakfast-

Bowl of rice and an egg

Lunch-

Skipped, wasn't hungry

Dinner-

1/2 of a small zucchini, roasted with olive oil and garlic
2 hard boiled eggs (didn't want to heat up the place too much)

Misc-
2 bottles of G2 Gatorade (45 calories a bottle)

Exercise-

Did PD1 with flying colors, although still 15 reps a move.  I tried something new- doing my dance cardio outside~ with my own music.  I was able to do about 10 minutes of cardio, combo 1 and 2 each once to a song, then random TA-derived movements around the driveway (skipping, jumping, jumping jacks, etc)

I am so tired but it feels good!

Day 8- 8/9/10

Hello!

Today is a new week, which means a new weigh in~

Today's weight: 255.8 lb/ 116.27 kg... An approximate 5 lb/2.5 kg gain.  This is probably due to the face that I am on my monthly period and I do gain quite a bit of water retention weight.

Breakfast:

Bowl of rice and an egg with 3 ounces of leftover lean corned beef
1 sheet of seasoned roasted seaweed

Lunch:

2 beef hot dogs, plain and no buns.
1 bottle of gatorade low calorie

Snack:

1 venti caramel light frappucino from Starbucks

Dinner:

Beef vegetable noodle soup

Total calorie count for today is approximately 1500.

Exercise...

Attempted some cardio, but quickly started to feel worse.  Cleaned my apartment and did laundry and then became really drained, so I did not do my Perfect Design today.  I should be feeling up to it tomorrow. Today my period was so bad even advil didn't help. But the worst SHOULD be over!

Day 6... Exhaustion

Hello!

The concert last night really took a lot out of me! I crashed in bed last night and didn't wake up until about 5... in the afternoon.  Recuperating for tomorrow, when I go back to Lollapalooza (the music festival here in Chicago going on this weekend) tomorrow to enjoy some more good music!

Even though I won't be doing TA today or tomorrow, I will still be a good girl caloriewise!

Yesterday I didn't eat much, had Asian food for lunch then pretty much water the rest of the day aside from a few snacks I brought with.

Today, not much eating either, considering I was sleeping :)

Thursday, August 5, 2010

Day 4- 8/5/10

Hello!

Today was another workout-less day.  Why?  Because I am going to Lollapalooza over this weekend~ LOTS of walking/standing around tomorrow and Sunday. I took it easy on the eating today as well.  Saturday I will be working out, I will be home that day.

Breakfast

1 bowl of rice and an egg

Lunch

Mashed potatoes with a LITTLE butter in it

Dinner

6 inch Italian BMT sub from Subway

Dessert

A snack cake *about 200 calories*
1 glass of coca cola

Tomorrow I am going to still blog/watch the calories albeit very late at night- Going to see Lady Gaga tomorrow night- she also is rumored to be doing the Tracy Anderson Method too! I will be filming the concert/taking pics~ I'll put them up for your enjoyment! :)

Day 3- 8/4/10

Hello~

Day 3 went a lot better than yesterday.  Still a little sore but exercise was still doable. Also, I know this sounds crazy and that my "eyes are playing tricks on me", I am starting to see visual results after my second day of actual exercise.  I notice a little of a dent in my belly, and some changes in my thighs and butt too.

Today was a lot more dietarily meager than yesterday to make up for all of the calories I took in.

Breakfast

1 bowl of rice and an egg

Lunch

1 bowl of rice and some kimchi (Korean pickled cabbage- also thought to help weight loss among other health benefits)

Dinner

3 ounces of corned beef
Homemade beef noodle soup, my bowl consisting of:
1 cup of noodles (cooked)
1 small potato
2 cups of beef broth
1 bottle of San Pellegrino mineral water

Exercise:

PD1 DVD, skipped the cardio today because after the DVD, I was so tired... I just laid down and took a power nap. Tomorrow I will attempt cardio again! <3

Tuesday, August 3, 2010

Day 2- 8/3/10

Hello!

Today is day two of the quest... And I have to admit, I did slack off a little.  I did not work out today OR eat well... D'oh!!! However, if I go back to the straight and narrow for the rest of the week (at least until Friday) I will have done my required 4-6 day a week workouts.  Therefore I have not considered today to be "falling off the wagon".

I am sore today but nowhere near as torn up as I felt last week.  This time I did PD1 yesterday at my own pace, and only about 10-15 reps a move (last week I tried to keep up with her and do as many.... Fail!)

Today I ate... (this is what makes it worse... But at least I'm admitting it and being accountable!)

Breakfast:

A small bowl of rice and an egg

Midmorning snack (I don't know why but I was so hungry soon after... )

2 twinkies
1 glass of coke (Yeah I know... bad!)

Lunch

Rice and and egg again
corn on the side

Dinner

3 Korean vegetable pancakes (delicious but fried... )

Dessert

2 twinkies

Yeah I know... Horrible. Well, I will do my best to be good from now on, at least until Sunday, my designated cheat day!

Sunday, August 1, 2010

Ready... Set...Go!

Hello!

Today is Sunday, August 1st and this is the last day before I begin my first month of the Tracy Anderson method!  I'm making sure to get good and rested and to enjoy a few treats (like Coca Cola) before I kick off my diet and exercise tomorrow!   I will try to do the PD1 DVD before my dance cardio unless I have work or something in the morning, in which case I will at least do the dance cardio before work, then PD1 before bed (if I do cardio at night, the downstairs neighbors will complain.  They are not home during the day, luckily).

I am really psyched and excited, I will be weighing in every Monday, measuring in every month.

See you all tomorrow!

Still sore... And tips for beginners!

Hello!

Unfortunately today I was still pretty sore, and had my chemistry final today...  I have come to the decision that Day 1 will begin on August 1st.  Not only will I provide an updated weight as a starting point, I will also be taking my body measurements because weight loss is not the only sign of fat loss.  You can stay the same weight, but lose measurable fat off of your body and look better.

I should have seen this blog post first. Very useful information about starting out on the method at home, focusing mainly on learning the dreaded (for many) Dance Cardio!

http://tracyandersonmethod.com/fitness/entry/new-video-tips-for-beginners

Another things she said in the interview following PD1-

1. To really see results it DOES take serious commitment.
2. You must be patient with yourself and only do as much as you can do at a time.
3. Dance aerobics is just as important as the toning.
4. You will feel tired the next day, but you should not feel sore.

Also she mentions to do PD1 for a month, and get good at it. Then, switch up your workouts every ten days.  (do the old mat workout, the webisodes, etc)  She also mentions that if you join her site (which I did), they are going to send all clients 3 free webisodes a month, for you to do one every 10 days.  Not sure when but in her DVDs she says it, and I heard somewhere else that it should start happening this fall.

Day 2! 7/27/10

Hello!!!

Today I kinda had to take it easy.  Yesterday was my first day doing PD1 and today I am just. So. Sore.  Well, being that it's the last week of the month, I have this idea- Tracy says to work out 4-6 times a week.  I am thinking I am going to take just 4 this week to get used to the moves, then bust out August with the goal of 5-6 times a week (ideally 6).

Breakfast

Oatmeal and Stevia

Lunch

A pack of beef jerky (not really hungry)
1 bottle of low cal gatorade

Dinner

1.5 cups of Mongolian beef (it's like... 190 calories a cup or something? It's one of the healthier things from the Chinese restaurant.)
Side of steamed broccoli

Treat

Venti Caramel Light Frappucino from Starbucks. No whip, and I think the whole thing is about 220 calories for the huge one (which is what Venti means)

Exercise

No PD1 today. A bit sore and today was pretty hectic.  No beginner DC either. However, I did crank out an hour of walking at 3.0 on the treadmill instead. No running. Just walking. :)

Tomorrow is a BDC/PD1 day for sure. I want to do it at least 3 more times before Sunday, which is my designated rest day.

Monday, July 26, 2010

It's official! Day 1

Hello!!!

As promised, today is day 1 of the quest~

Starting stats:

Height: 5'5" (165 cm)
Weight: 252 lb (114.5 kg)
Goal #1: 199 lb (90 kg)
Goal #2: 175 lb (80 kg)
Goal #3: 150 lb (68 kg)
Goal #4: 117-127 lb (53-58 kg)

Note: I do not lately have a large appetite due to a medication I am on.  So please, know that I am NOT starving myself on purpose.  I just can't get myself to eat a lot sometimes.

Breakfast

1 bowl of oatmeal with stevia
1 bottle of water

Lunch

Skipped due to medicine
1 bottle of low calorie Gatorade

Dinner

Plate full of lettuce
Balsamic vinaigrette
2-3 oz of grilled steak
1 bottle San Pellegrino mineral water (yummy~!)

Snacks

2 oz of beef jerky (almost fat free!)

Exercise

1 hour walking on the treadmill at 3.0 mph.  Didn't have an opportunity to do the Dance Cardio video because I had repairmen at the house fixing my refrigerator.

Perfect Design 1 DVD

This was difficult. Not crazy difficult but pretty damn hard. I was dripping within a few minutes.

A word of caution- if you are totally unfamiliar with the TA method, I strongly suggest trying the older Mat Workout first. Why? Because a lot of moves in PD1 are from the older video, done very quickly, and without much instruction.   However, if you think you can handle it, go ahead!  After a few times doing it, I think then I will be able to keep up quite a bit better.

A common complaint- no arm weights in PD1. So what? It's pretty tough on the arms this time even without them~!

Well, off to shower and bed now, going to do this tomorrow too!

Good night~~~

Birthday!

Hello everyone~

I decided to hold off on starting full on because this past week, I celebrated my 25th birthday!  And birthday means cake, drinks, and this might happen on more than just one day.  In my case, it happened 3 different days of the week.  Also, my summer course's finals were this week, one more week of class but nothing that would prevent me from working out.

So, after resting over this weekend, I look forward to hopping on the Tracy wagon on Monday!

Welcome- About me and about the Tracy Anderson Method

Hello!

Welcome to my blog, where I will be blogging daily about my quest to lose at least 120 pounds/54 Kg (That's about half of what I weigh now!) using the Tracy Anderson Method.  But who am I, who is Tracy Anderson, and what does her method consist of?

About me:

I am a 24 (25 on the 22nd of this month~) year old female college student who has a lot of weight to lose.  I was also a dancer when I was young, I did ballet for a few years, and loved every minute of it.  During high school/early college I, like Tracy Anderson, experienced a massive weight gain.  I have been on all sorts of fad diets, tried Turbo Jam, Tae Bo, P90X, and others like it and either I felt like it did nothing or it made me a firmer, yet same size and heavier than I was when I began.  I heard about the Tracy Anderson Method and thought I could give it a shot.

Tracy Anderson is a celebrity trainer, who also was a dancer who gained a lot of weight.  She also tried a myriad of exercises and diets, and she couldn't get the weight off either.  She ended up developing her own method that can change pretty much anyone into a "teeny tiny dancer type" over the course of about 8-10 years.  She trains/has trained Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna, Shakira, Courteney Cox, and as tabloid rumors have it, Lady Gaga as well.

What does the method consist of?  Tracy recommends doing 40 minutes to an hour of cardio- namely dance cardio- and 40-60 minutes of her own specially designed muscular structure workouts.  Most of these toning exercises are done on a yoga mat, the most equipment you need is a dining room chair and a set of 3 pound (for women) or 8 pound (for men) weights.  Tracy forbids lifting any weight higher than that, or your muscles will bulk.   That light of weight does sound easy, but her tactic is to do a lot of reps with the light weight.  Also if you get good at her leg workouts, you can wear 1.5 lb each ankle weights, but not more than that.
On the subject of bulking, let's revert back to where I mentioned she wants her clients to do dance cardio.  She forbids running, elliptical or bike because you are doing the same movement over and over which she says causes bulk.  With dance cardio, you are not moving the same way constantly, but dancing all over the place, using your muscles in all sorts of different ways.

Sounds great, how do we do this at home?

Tracy has several DVDs out for home use and she has recently come out with more.  She also has released webisodes to vary your workouts.  She also has a great treadmill option in case you are on the road or cannot do dance cardio easily at home for whatever reason.

Her DVDs can be purchased on her site, http://tracyandersonmethod.com or on amazon.  I have all of the DVDs and webisodes she has released so far except for her latest Dance Cardio DVD, which I am not ready for anyway as it is advanced.

Tracy suggests to get good at one DVD for about a month, until you master it.  You should be (ideally) doing both the cardio and the muscle structure 4-6 times per week.  One of these should be one of the following- Post Pregnancy, Mat Workout, or Perfect Design 1.  After you master this, you should change between the rest of the material every 10 days or so, so that you do not become static.  Also, if you still feel you need longer than a month to master the basics, do take your time and work at your own pace.

What do you eat?  Tracy says that if you do not need to lose much weight, you can eat what you want sensibly.  If you do have weight to lose (as I do) you must be strict with yourself.  Tracy says those looking to lose weight should avoid processed foods and dairy, and instead eat things like lean meat/fish, vegetables and brown rice.   And of course, plenty of water!

My beginning routines to master- Beginner Dance Cardio and Perfect Design 1.

I will be starting tomorrow, July 20th with my starting weight and how my first day went! I hope to see you back!
